Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra
The Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra has continually offered robust musical training and personal development for young musicians throughout the San Gabriel Valley for over 40 years (1972). PYSO is considered among the best youth orchestras in the Southland. The PYSO is comprised of middle school students from grades six through nine. These committed young people receive advanced instruction and challenging music opportunities through a rigorous program that emphasizes ensemble playing. Members of the PYSO have performed throughout the world, including venues in Vienna, New York’s Carnegie Hall, the ASTA Conference and Competition in Santa Clara and many others. Last season, the PYSO appeared in concert with the United States Air Force Academy Band, Blue Steel at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Members of PYSO have also had many opportunities for additional performances outside the full orchestra program such chamber music at Pasadena Symphony concerts and a special guest appearance on Fox’s TV sensation, Glee. PYSO falls under the auspices of the Pasadena Symphony Association and often interacts with Pasadena Symphony and POPS conductors, guest artists, musicians and staff.

Notes from Mr. Yearick (Wind Ensemble)

Schedule 4.30.13
5:15-6:20 Full Orchestra (Wm. Tell Overture)
6:20-6:30 Break
6:30-7:15 Jubilance/Polaris/Norland

This will be our final Tuesday practice before our concert on May 4. Please have your music and be on time!!

Practice Tip for the Week:
Listen to your body. Sometimes musicians forget the importance of being fit not only in mind but also in body. If you're straining to read the music in front of you, do have your eyes checked. If you're having trouble deciphering tones coming from your instrument, consider having an ear exam. If your back hurts every time you sit down to practice, determine if this has something to do with posture. Listen to your body; if it feels like something is not quite right, schedule a check-up as soon as possible.

Quote for the Week:
"Success is a continuing thing. It is growth and development. It is achieving one thing and using that as a stepping stone to achieve something else." -John Maxwell

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Notes from Mr. Yearick (Wind Ensemble)

Schedule for 4.23.13
5:15-6:20 Full Orchestra (Wm. Tell Overture)
6:20-6:30 Break
6:30-7:15 Polaris/Wicked

Practice Tip for the Week:
Make your practice area comfortable. Is your seat comfortable? Is the room well ventilated? Is there proper lighting? Make sure that your practice area is free from distractions so you can concentrate. Also, consider adjusting the practice schedule depending on the time of year. For example, during summer when the temperature is hotter, you can schedule your practice in the mornings when it's cooler.

Quote for the Week:
"Every worthwhile accomplishment has a price tag attached to it. The question is always whether you are willing to pay the price to attain it - in hard work, sacrifice, patience, faith, and endurance." John C. Maxwell

Thursday, April 11, 2013

Notes from Mr. Yearick (Wind Ensemble)

Schedule 4.16.13
5:15-6:20 Jubilance/Norland
6:20-6:30 Break
6:30-7:15 Sectionals (Last one for the year! Please thank your teachers!) Wm. Tell Overture

Practice Tip for the Week:
Never forget your finger exercises and warm-ups. Finger exercises and warm-ups are crucial if you want to be a good player. Not only will it make your hand and fingers more flexible, it will also reduce the danger of injuries. Every instrument player must do warm-ups first before playing or performing. You won't run a marathon without stretching first, right? The same principle applies to playing an instrument.

Quote for the Week:
"He, who is afraid of doing too much, always does too little."

Friday, March 29, 2013

Notes from Mr. Yearick (Wind Ensemble)

Schedule 4.2.13
5:15 - 6:20 Full Orchestra. Please meet in the Choir Room (William Tell).
6:20 - 6:30 Break
6:30 - 7:15 WE Rehearsal (Polaris, Norland March).

Reminder: No rehearsal next week - April 9th (PYSO Spring Break!)

Practice Tip for the Week:
Aim to practice everyday. Even the best musicians strive to practice their instrument daily. Make practice part of your daily routine. Determine when is the best time for you to practice. If you like practicing in the morning, get up at least 1 hour early so that you won't be late to school. If you're an evening person, do your practice before going to bed or before you become sleepy. If you skip a practice day, don't worry, but try to make up for the missed practice session by extending your practice time for a least 5 minutes for your next session.

Quote for the Week:
"Success to going from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm." -Abraham Lincoln

Friday, March 22, 2013

Notes from Mr. Yearick (Wind Ensemble)

Schedule 3.26.13
5:15-6:20 Jubilance/Wicked
6:20-6:30 Break
6:30-7:15 Sectionals: Polaris/Norland March

Practice Tip of the Week:
Remember, it's not a race. Keep in mind that each person learns at varying speeds, some are quick learners while others take time to progress. Don't be ashamed if you feel you're progressing slower than your classmates. Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare? Keep that in mind when you're having self-doubts. The best musicians reached their level of success through determination and patience. It is not how quickly you learned to play a music piece; it is about playing from your heart!

Quote for the Week:
"Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it" Lou Holtz.

5:15-6:20 Polaris/Norland
6:20-6:30 Break
6:30-7:15 Sectionals - William Tell/Jubilance

Practice the difficult sections first. Practice them slowly, then gradually up to speed. Then go back and play the entire piece.

Quote for the Week:

Success is 99 percent failure.

Make the time spent practicing a quality effort. Your goal should be to improve each time you practice, rather than to repeatedly play the parts you know.

Quote for the Week:
There are no shortcuts to any place worth going (Beverly Sills, Opera Singer).

You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine
